The Dearly Beloved by Cara Wall

5.0

James and Nan, Charles and Lily are four very different people. Their lives are inextricably intertwined when James and Charles are hired as co-pastors at Third Presbyterian Church. They must work together to lead their church body while navigating their own personal lives outside the church.

Even though this book centers around church and religion, it will resonate with people with various belief systems. It is not preachy and the story addresses the doubt and lack of faith copiously. At its core, this is a story about finding your way and supporting your partner without compromising who you are. I loved all of the characters and their distinct personalities. They often did not get along or agree on issues, but they overcome many challenges together and become utterly connected in a beautiful way. I also enjoyed the inclusion of many important social issues, including civil rights and mentally disabled children. For that time period, their attitude was very progressive, and it was evident how deeply all four people cared about others.

This book is what I thought [b:Crossing to Safety|9820|Crossing to Safety|Wallace Stegner|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1436043179l/9820._SY75_.jpg|1488871] would be like; a slower plot but meaningful and profound. The pace of Crossing to Safety was much too slow for me, but I'm glad I found what I was looking for in this book.
