Some Like it Plaid by Angela Quarles
3.0
Connall’s tribe is short on women after a raid stole them away. So with a little magic and help from a local Druid, he gets sent to modern San Francisco to find a woman.
Ashley is desperate. Her ex husband built a ton of debt in her name and turned her family against her. She’s living in a podshare and trying to work off his debts. So when she sees an ad for a job in Scotland, she goes to the interview and is surprised she gets it.
Unfortunately she didn’t realize it wasn’t a job of cooking and cleaning, but a marriage to a man from 159 AD Dunadd.
I was hoping more time would be spent in the modern age, but it was mostly historical.
I liked how the magic made her understand their language, and it gave her the equivalent of what she packed. Since she had her phone and laptop, the equivalent was being a diviner. She could tell you what the weather was doing and major events from history - I thought that was clever.
I didn’t like how much she had to sacrifice for Connall. She makes the biggest sacrifice and the majority of the compromises. I wasn’t a fan of their romance. Just didn’t really feel any sparks.
