Blood of Elves by Andrzej Sapkowski

5.0

The Witcher, Geralt of Rivia, becomes the guardian of Ciri, surviving heiress of a bloody revolution and prophesied savior of the world.

There is something inherently animalistic about this book, as if Sapkowski is reaching past the words and the paper to something bigger than you and me, that hidden crack in our hearts that we all know but never acknowledge. It made me question the role of a guardian, the watcher who guides. Geralt of the books might not be the grim, silent Geralt of the show or the video games, but he’s monstrous and human at the same time in a way either of the adaptations are not.

For one, I’m glad there’s only one Geralt in the world. He’s a character larger than life in odd ways, and his charge, Ciri is a child who seems to have been built for mystery. Who is she? What is her purpose? How is she so dangerous? Only Geralt of Kaer Morhen knows. Not Rivia. He’s been waiting for her for a long, long time.
