Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness

5.0

Update December 3, 2022. I still love these books. I think this one tips out as my favorite. They just go through so much together. And even they they are magical, they feel so real.

Loved the first one.  Loved this one.  Cannot wait for the third one!

Just like the first, this book is full of description.  It is not a quick, easy read.  But it has depth.  The characters stay true to themselves while still managing to surprise you from time to time.

I loved how the author jumped to present day showing how the main characters (now in the past -- 1590/91) are changing it.  The author clearly does her homework and pays a lot of attention to assuring historical accuracy.  Another reviewer complained about the time-travel stuff saying it was not well done. I disagree, I thought it was done in a way that made sense.  Just don't think about it too much and accept that sometimes it's just magic.  Remember, since no on has actually ever time-traveled, it's all theory.

Overall, a great book.  I think this will be one of those trilogies that never leaves my book shelf so I can re-read as often as I'd like.
