The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
3.0
Sometimes I hated Holden. Sometimes I felt just like Holden. And I think he’d get that.
Really, I’d give this 3.5 stars if I could. Outstanding writing, pacing, characterization, and attention to detail. Tbh, I don’t love stories like this that capture the descent into depression…because in Holden’s words, “it depresses the hell out of me,” but I’d wish I’d read this when I was depressed. I would’ve felt understood, and I would’ve understood that sometimes depression isn’t a clear cut but just a bang of hopelessness that makes you do stupid things.
