As avid a reader I was as a kid I never actually read Tom Sawyer or Huckleberry Finn. I knew who they were and a little bit about them, but I didn’t know the actual books. James by Percival Everett sounded so interesting to me but to get the full depth of this book I thought I should read Huckleberry Finn first. I am only sorry I never read it when I was younger because it was excellent!
Huckleberry Finn is the recounting by Huckleberry of his journey down the Mississippi River on a raft with Jim, a runaway slave. He recalls the adventures they went on and the scrapes they got both into and out of and it’s written from Huck’s perspective in the form of a letter or diary entry. It’s definitely an easy read/listen and a great book for any student who has to read a classic.
I was really blown away at how funny this was. I was expecting adventure and honestly I was expecting to be a little bored, but while the former was definitely there, I wasn’t bored at all!
Everyone says Mark Twain is one of the best writers of all time and having listened to this, I can totally see that. I’ll definitely be adding The Adventures of Tom Sawyer to my TBR and I am hoping Mr. Everett’s imagining of Jim’s side of the story is just as entertaining.
