Trunk Music by Michael Connelly

3.0

Bosch is a lunatic. He can't solve a single case without breaking several laws, pissing off the entire chain of command, getting other people killed, and bringing his own precious career to the brink of termination. If this guy existed in real life we'd have to build a scale-model L.A. habitat for him just to keep his chaos contained.

This book was partly ruined for me by the TV show, which adheres pretty closely to the source material here for one of its seasons. But the plots diverge in the final 100 pages, so my attention picked up there. I admit, I'm often aggravated by Bosch and his unnecessary, counter-productive cowboy shit. But when Connelly gets it right—when all pots are boiling and the hunt is on—he's as good as it gets for constructing a gripping mystery. Trunk Music is an average entry, in my opinion.
