It was an extremely dry and painfully stretched retelling of all the trial proceedings without any real insight into the lives of the victims;
Why did Mrs Mills detest her husband and why did he assume the victims had eloped when they were missing?
How did Mrs Hall really think her husband faithful when the entire parish knew of the affair?
Why was Willie Stevens troubled over the events of the night of the murder and told to keep quiet, yet this was not questioned at trial.
The unanswered questions go on.
Furthermore, the last chapter pointed to a more likely group of perpetrators being the KKK seeing as they had been already known for punishing anyone they deemed had been immoral or suspected of taking part in something sinful.
