Screwmates by Kayti McGee

5.0

This has definitely been my week for amazeballs rom-coms and I think that Screwmates by Kayti McGee tops the list. Oh my goodness this book made me laugh until I needed to pee! And while childbirth has made this somewhat easier in theory, it does take someone with incredible writing skill and wit to pull it off. This had everything I absolutely love in books—great banter, awkward situations, and pop culture references. The TARDIS was even mentioned and for the Whovian in me, that makes me squee in excitement.

Madison is geeky, socially awkward and absolutely adorable. I totally got her right from the start. I wanted to adopt her as my little sister and keep her in my pocket or something. She’s got more talent in her little pinky then I do in my arm. Marc is serious, studious and is convinced his life is as dull as his couch color. It’s like the battle of the geeks vs. the nerds (and yes there is a difference!). The banter, the awkwardness between these two was hilarious. There was some great tension as well and fabulous heat. It takes some skill to balance humor and red hot heat but McGee definitely pulled it off. The secondary characters were just as great. I loved all of Madison’s friends.

The character development was great. Both Madison and Marc were decently complex people with insecurities and flaws that made them relatable. I was able to easily connect with them, even if I disagree with Marc about his lingerie choice (Wonder Woman can be sexy!). This book definitely checked all the boxes on what I want from a rom-com. I cannot wait to see what else McGee has to offer and this one is definitely going on my re-read shelf.

If you love to laugh, you have to check this book out. Just be careful while drinking, snorting anything out through your nose is painful. Trust me.
