Spectyr by Philippa Ballantine

4.0

I am going to have to edit my shelves for books like this.
Spectyr completely lives up to the promise the author made in the first book, and I am completely hooked by the story of the magic weilding Deacons, Sorcha and Merrick, and their bonded companion Raen, cursed by (being) a terrible beast.

This still has the strange steampunk/pulp vibe from the first one, but while the last book was based in a pseudo-northern europe, this book takes us to a pseudo-northern africa. The eye of the storm is located in a mud palace that evokes the idea of the great mosque of Djenne, and we learn a whole lot more about the history of this world (especially through the experiences of Merrick).

I loved this book, but cant give it five, as the start was painfully slow at times, and we only return to the same page turning intensity at around 173 into the book, but then it is even better than the first book.

I know I am longing to read the next in this series!
