The Utopia of Rules: On Technology, Stupidity, and the Secret Joys of Bureaucracy by David Graeber

5.0

Graeber is excellent again but I expected nothing less. A smoother and easier read than debt was as Graeber let’s his personality through a little more which I think is a good thing. In comparison to Debt I am not left as awe struck as I was like he has just completely shifted my world view but I am left still with an altered one.

My passionate hatred for bureaucracy burns stronger yet, as my understanding of it is so much deeper. I can appreciate its necessity but also how we got here much more now and I guess we’re left to think how do we get out of it? If we ever can. Graeber seems to think we can but I’m not certain he’s convinced me, I want to, but perhaps I’m being too pessimistic. When we are driven to efficiency by capitalism we are forced to take the bureaucratic highway, until we are released the country roads make no sense! God help us all.
