Upon reading this a second time after so many years I now see this story as one of horror. A tale of an alien race whose so called benevolent actions belies their needs to ruin any autonomy the humans have left. Everything they do is supposedly for the human species own good, but is it? Butler is so adept at exploring conflict in all the relationships examined in the story. Now I remember why the story haunted me in such a way and now I have to continue on to the next one to see if Lillith's plan works.
