He was lucky to get to embark on such an interesting journey but sadly the novel lacks depth. It was about where he went, who he met, what he did, so basically a regular travelog. There was one poignant moment but that's it. This book can be so much more if he just expand it a little bit and maybe add more background to the people and places mentioned.
