God Themselves by Jae Nichelle

adventurous challenging dark emotional funny hopeful inspiring mysterious reflective sad tense fast-paced

4.0

This poetry collection is about being black and queer and how that fits into religion (maybe southern American religion spaces). BUT it also is  a breath of fresh air where someone really shows/describes the  hard to articulate emotions of what it means to be human in a world that always wants to tell you exactly how you should be or what you should be doing.  The poetry plays with words and form and even though the topic is hard - there is still so much joy in this book. Jae Nichelle is a spoken word poet, and therefore the audio is excellent (check out her vital YouTube video Friends with Benefits). Shout out to Caroline and and Natalie for suggesting reading and listening together. If you skipped poetry in poetry month- I would suggest  reading this in May.
