City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
4.0
Okay, well, when I first was reading this book I loved it. Well, actually for the majority of the book I loved it. It truly has everything I love in a book - fantasy, romance, a sexy and strong guy to fall in the arms of.
But then, all my hopes and dreams for this series came to a screeching halt when I found out that...they are brother and sister!!!
I'm sorry, but that made me extremely mad and betrayed by Cassandra Clare. Why would she do this to me? Make me fall in love with Clary and Jace falling in love and then crush that? I don't like it. Even if it makes for a truly unexpected ending, I don't like it. I like love stories that don't turn the lovers into brother and sister!
So why four stars? Well, this was a really good book despite that. The entire book was action packed and constantly moving, constantly urging me to turn the page. It also had the love aspect, which I tend to love.
Don't get me wrong by the way, Simon is great. I think that their love story will blossom wonderfully in the upcoming books. But Cassandra portrays him to us as this geeky kid who's been in love with her all their lives but she hasn't noticed him. Therefore, why would I notice him as being the primary love interest? Ya know? I mean, he's sweet but I just see in the upcoming books Clary's view of him changing into something completely different than what she's (the author) already painted him to be. I just have this feeling that her seeing him as this geeky langly boy will turn into him being this strong dominamt male character that he wasn't in the first book. The images contradict and I just think she'll (the author) warp him into another character (physically) for the purposes of the story. So that bugs me.
Overall though, this book was really good, complete with the unexpected ending. I'm just a little leary of continuing the series for fear of being betrayed again. Will Simon end up really being Valentine or a demon in disguise in the end? I just don't TRUST the author anymore. She made me love Jace as the main love interest and now it's going to be really weird reading about them as brother and sister. I can't see how, in reality, their relationship will ever be anything other than awkward since they have, if nothing else, already kissed at least.
That part I just can't get past. If that didn't happen, I would have easily given this book five stars (which I don't for many books).
Speaking of trust; the other thing that really bugged me is that practically every character in this book, at some point, was made to look terrible. Isabel hated her at first, Alec hated her until the threat of her being with Jace was gone, Hodge betrays them, etc. It just makes me wonder about what the other characters are really hiding.
But I will probably continue reading, but I don't know about right away. I'm still a little weirded out by the ending and I think I need to let that soak in a little bit.
