Meet Stanley Yelnats, a kid who is convicted of a crime he didn’t commit, no thanks to his “no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather.” Instead of going to jail, Stanley is sent to Camp Green Lake to build his character by digging a 5 foot hole every day. His story is masterfully woven together with that of his great-great grandfather and Kissin’ Kate Barlow, leading to a great reading experience!
This book doesn’t have a whole lot of concerning content, but it does discuss bullying and racism and briefly mentions murder. I don’t think any of it is too heavy for a fourth or fifth grader, but it may be something you want to discuss with your kids after reading.
Moderate: Racism
Minor: Bullying and Murder
