An Abundance of Katherines by John Green

4.0

This was quite a lovely book. Colin is a lover of Katherine's. By his 19th, he is heartbroken and embarks on a road trip to heal his heart with his best friend Hassan. Colin and Hassan drive from Illinois to nowhere Tennessee and find themselves.
Colin is worried about mattering and improving upon his child prodigy status. He is smart, but what else has he done with his life? Currently, his main life goal has been getting dumped by girls named Katherine. He is constantly worried that he has already peaked and tries to better himself on a daily basis. He comes up with a formula to predict the ending of all his past and current relationships. He spends most of his time in Cutshot, TN working on his formula and avoiding girls named Katherine.
Hassan is smart as well, but not as smart as Colin. Hassan is older than Colin but took a year off of college and is currently spending his time watching Judge Judy all day. Hassan takes this road trip as an opportunity to get out of his funk and try something new. Hassan meets a girl and has a brief but meaningful relationship with her in TN.
Colin and Hassan live with Lindsey and her mother in Cutshot. Lindsey is dating another Colin and perfectly content to spend her whole life in Cutshot. She is smart but doesn't know the extent of her brilliance because she is holding herself back. Colin and Hassan stumble upon Lindsey's boyfriend with another girl and come to Lindsey's defense. Lindsey is now single and finally her and Colin get together.
This was a fun story to read. Each of the characters are so well written and fun to read about. I feel bad for Colin and his dumpee situation and wanting to matter. I think everyone wants to be more than they are and Colin just feels that more so than most people. His intelligence works against him in this matter. Colin and Hassan reach a new point in their friendship and this experience truly changes everyone involved for the better.
