The Glassmaker is a unique take on historical fiction. Following the same characters over centuries, it is a love letter to Venice. For most of the book I was prepared to give it a solid 3 stars- well written, interesting concept, fleshed out characters. The last two chapters bumped it up to a 3.5 stars by tying the whole thing together. I didn't know where this book was going before that, but finally we see how Venice's centuries of history come together to create the dreamy city that it is today. This book reminded me that we do not live in unprecedented times- human history has always been a grimy, messy thing. But sometimes all that grime and mess comes together to create a beautiful thing.
