One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia
3.0
Delphine, Vonetta, and Fern find themselves flying unaccompanied across the United States to be reunited with their mother who walked out on the family several years previously. Their mother has not been in contact with the girls, but it is apparent that their father has kept track of her and knows how to contact her. It is set during the 60's amidst social unrest and the civil rights movement. At eleven, Delphine hopes to find her mother "motherly," warm and nurturing but those adjectives fall far short of reality. Delphine has had to shoulder a lot of the responsibility of caring for her two younger sisters since her mother's disappearance. She is hoping that her mother will see the error of her ways and become the mother Delphine desires and needs.
