Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys

This is a children's book that was up for a national prize but it could easily stand alone as adult fiction. The story is very grim and harrowing, and unfortunately based on true events. It revolves around a Lithuanian family deported to Russia during World War Two. I actually cried in some parts, it was so upsetting. However it was well worth persevering with.
