You are instantly transported back to a world of 18th century petty criminality. vilany and tretchery. 

i don't think I have read a book with quite so many twists and turns. Where the lines between good and evil are so blured.

This is the most harrowing novel I have read in a very long long time most notably with regards to 18th century attitudes to women and mental health.

That said though. I am so glad I made it to the end as it is a sublime novel.
