The Masked Heart by Karla Darcy

3.0

For a book I got free for kindle this was definitely a pleasant surprise, but still not more than a three-star book.

I did enjoy all of the characters - even the villain came of suitably disgusting - except for the hero. I never felt like he shone as a character and he came off as more of a romance fiction stock hero than a character in his own rite.

The major problem of the story was never solved. The couple ends up together but there is no discussion of how they're going to make it work and things end so suddenly that I felt off-balance at the end.

The prose was excellent. In a sea of really bad kindle books it definitely stood out but it did have its issues. Frequent minor errors (typos mainly and the occasional odd comma) were easily forgiven in light of the good writing. As the story went on however, rather than give a scene in all its detail, the story would skip ahead to the next scene, sparing maybe a paragraph to sum up what had occurred earlier.

I would definitely read another book by Karla Darcy but I'd go in cautiously.
