Death in Ecstasy by Ngaio Marsh
4.0
Great opening chapter. Several assorted people all head out on a rainy London night to the same destination. Each has a different motive in going there. I was thoroughly hooked at the end of that chapter.
Marsh is not well-enough known nowadays I think. The patter between her detective and his reporter friend is sometimes too archaic for modern ears; that might be part of the problem. Conversation that was snappy and bright in the 1920s sounds slightly bizarre today. Solid story-telling though.
