The Deep by Nick Cutter

4.0

I went into this blind, I really enjoyed it though. I felt like he blended the flashbacks smoothly in with the current day story. I found the overall plot really interesting and it easily sucks you in and is addicting to read.
Maybe I'm dumb but towards the end I kind of lost grip on what is happening and maybe that's on purpose? Maybe we're not supposed to be able to make sense of what's going on towards the end, but I was kind of frustrated with that. I do find it interesting that this being one of my first horror books that there are no trigger warnings in the beginning. Maybe I'm just a newbie and most horror writers don't really do that.
I really liked that Nick cutter brought in multiple themes that really add a whole new level to the horror. Not only is spooky things happening, but the whole situation in general is very unnerving and scary as well. Just the nature of what's happening in the story. Themes of grief, trauma, loneliness and isolation. It was really well done, I'll definitely be checking out his other books.

Trigger warnings. Don't scroll down. Slight spoilers!

Definitely submechanophobia, thalassophobia, claustrophobia, if you're afraid of bugs, specifically maggots or millipedes. Definitely a couple scenes with that... Harm to animals happens multiple times throughout the book. There is a certain scene that brought me to tears with that. If you're sensitive to gore and body horror this is not the book for you. There is also a brief scene about child molestation which I was not expecting, not describing it directly but it's implied.
