Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah

dark emotional funny reflective fast-paced

5.0

I love memoirs, but Born a Crime has to be one of the best ones I’ve ever read. I haven’t read any books surrounding apartheid in South Africa, which needs to change now after reading this masterpiece.

Ultimately a love letter to his remarkable mother, Trevor tells his coming-of-age story growing up during the transition of apartheid to freedom in South Africa. This was equally brutal and hilarious with plenty of tear-jerking and laugh-out-loud moments throughout. It completely encapsulates his type of humor and comedy while simultaneously showing readers a vulnerable side of him regarding his unbreakable bond with his mother.

I can’t emphasize this enough: FUCK Abel. Don’t want to give away any spoilers, so I’ll just leave it at that (even though I’d love nothing more than to go off). I’ve never hated anyone more who I’ve never met.

Anyway, if you like memoirs and haven’t read this one, you definitely need to add it to your list! I highly recommend.
