The Good House by Tananarive Due
4.0
While I definitely think it was a tad bit too long, I really enjoyed this!
Tananarive Due implemented time jumps and multiple POVs with true skill; I never felt lost or confused. The story as a whole was subtly eerie in just the right way, just like a gothic story should be. I found myself getting thoroughly creeped out, especially because I also live in an ancestor’s house and am not a stranger to feeling like I’m being watched lol. The inclusion of vodou (or, as it’s more popularly known, voodoo) was also a welcome surprise! It really grounded this story as a particular brand of gothic horror: African American.
I see now why Due is considered a heavyweight of Black horror! I’m looking forward to reading more of her work!
