answers many age old questions, including “why can’t i eat that [inanimate object] if it looks yummy” and “what if my house was racist?”. both concerns of mine so i can now rest easy.
in all seriousness, this is one of the best modern gothic horror novels i’ve come across. beautifully written in fever like prose that kept me grasping for more—finished it in 24 hours. deals with the horror of eating disorders in a very sensitive way— it feels learned and realistic. racial horror too; the constant background noise in the first half of hate crimes, and the things ore experiences in the house are proper terrifying. i already want to reread it. 10/10. this was my first read of 2024 and it was a perfect way to start out. and i agree with other reviewers—i would love to hear more of sade’s story!
