Why Men Love Bitches by Sherry Argov

informative medium-paced

1.5

Meh. This was another one that I chalk up to reading because of therapy (not because it was suggested, but it was mentioned and I’m a curious person). I have mixed feelings about it: it made for some interesting conversations with friends and it does have some good points, but overall I think it is a little too simplistic and makes men sound like dumb creatures who can’t think for themselves and only want sex (which is the thing that pisses me off most about “the patriarchy”). That said, I now understand what it means to “play games” in dating, because this was essentially the playbook—manipulation 101.

Ultimately, I liked the sections about having self respect and not being a doormat in a relationship or in life generally, but I had to just skim the rest by about 30% in because it was sort of annoying me how silly and antiquated the examples of “good relationships” were and how much the author contradicted herself. Like, “play dumb so he thinks he’s in charge”, but also, “be independent and never let him think you’re emotional”…the math ain’t mathing here.

TLDR: I think I need a break from self help/dating books for a minute.
