Fables, Vol. 1: Legends in Exile by Bill Willingham

5.0

I'm rereading these and was worried I wouldn't like them as well this time around. I was wrong. These are infinitely clever! The 'ghams get the story and the illustrations so perfectly. They walk that fine line between fairy tale and ridiculousness without once falling in either direction.

Sure, these are about the characters we read about, or were read to, as children, but these guys are all grown up and have grown up problems. The extrapolations they make based on the little detail we get from Grimm's (and other sources) is not only fantastic, but believable. Snow White makes sense as "Bitter, party of one", but still high functioning. The Big Bad Wolf, or Bigby as he is known here perfectly combines what we know of him and what makes sense when expanded upon. My favorite is Prince Charming. He's a bit of a twat, and sadly, this too makes sense.

How did Disney get away with Once Upon a Time? Plagiarism much?
