Dune by Frank Herbert

slow-paced

3.0

I was expecting not to like this to be honest, I assumed it would feel very dated. But it didn't! I'm pleasantly surprised. Although it helps that I've recently watched the new movie for the second time. I wouldn't have enjoyed the book as much if I didn't already have an idea of what happens.

I did notice the writing over explains the characters’ thoughts and feelings. This could have been tuned down, while the initial worldbuilding should have been deeper. I suspect without the movie I would have been confused in the first quarter or so. It did feel dull in places, but once I reached the first worm scene, I was flying through it.

Character-wise, I loved Jessica and all the Bene Gesserit shit. I got tired of Paul quickly, and Chani was barely there. Alia was wild, I can't wait to see how she's portrayed on screen. I'm sure they'll do more with Chani as well.

It was a slog in places, so I'll come back to the series later on, probably after November. I liked it, but that's mainly due to how much I enjoyed the new movie. It certainly has its flaws, so it's a solid 3 stars for me.
