The decision to write this book from the perspective of a five year old was a phenomenal one and really elevated the novel. I think if it had taken place in the third person or through Ma's perspective it wouldn't have nearly been as good.

SpoilerI do wish they talked more about their reintegration into society. That felt very underdeveloped, especially for the character of Ma. The throw away line about how she's trying to still be Ma but also learn to be herself again was something really thought provoking, but it's barely expanded on.
