Brave the Wild River: The Untold Story of Two Women Who Mapped the Botany of the Grand Canyon by Melissa L. Sevigny

5.0

A historical chronicle that reads like fiction - highly recommend the read if you are about to go on a river trip in the canyon or just returned from one. It is as much a modern classic as The Emerald Mile. Science nerds will especially love this since it gets into the biology that the women were cataloging but it's not too in depth to scare off people who aren't into hard science. I also love that it addresses the sexism (well, duh) and racism in the canyon's history of white 'explorers' even perpetuated by the women it follows. I am glad when authors don't shy away from these topics because Indigenous sovereignty and culture need to always be a part of any conversation about the Grand Canyon and the surrounding area.
