Impostor Syndrome by Kathy Wang
2.5
This book is entertaining, has an interesting story line but just fell a little flat for me. This is really a plot driven story. The characters are very uninteresting. I wished for characters that I cared more about. The place dropping was a little pretentious too but I guess that’s Silicon Valley startup culture for you.
One other complaint I had about this and many other Asian American authors is I don’t like the characterization of Asian people. I feel like it can cause people to have racist views against Asians if you say Asian immigrants are pushy and uneducated. (By pushy I am thinking of the part where the author is describing Asian grandmothers at 99 Ranch.) Using this characterization just perpetuates the racist stereotypes. I wish there was a greater variety of Asian characters which would make them more individual characters than a caricature.
