This is a book I read for the first time years ago, but couldn't remember the title until recently. I'm so glad I found it again! It was incredibly heartbreaking, but also oddly hopeful and uplifting. You will fall in love with these characters, despite how short this book is, and really feel for everything they go through. There are moments of joy, but with an ever present feeling of inevitable sadness. The reactions of the side characters also feel very human, and whilst their actions sometimes seem harsh, the author does a good job of knowing when to introduce the reasons for these actions. This book reminded me of Nicola Yoon because of the way its written, so I'd particularly recommend it to fans of that author.
