The Idiot by Elif Batuman

3.0

so much of this story could have been cut and that would have made this significantly better. The finale line sums up everything that the author wanted to communicate but Batuman put in so much unnecessary characters and dialogue I couldn’t take it how unnecessary it was. Perhaps all of this randomness was Batuman’s attempt at showing the behavior of language but… It not once felt like it made the story better in any way.

Other than that, Batuman, is undoubtedly a genius. Setting this book in 1995, the precursor of social media allows us to see how within the confides of email it already allows us to idealize the people we communicate with. And this is already happening in 1995, and it will only get worst with social media, almost acting like a warning to what the world is in for.
