That Boy by Jillian Dodd

3.0

That Boy follows JJ (Jadyn) and her two best friends--Phillip and Danny--from youth to college. Told from JJ's perspective, it is a novel about growth and friendship. JJ, Phillip, and Danny navigate how friendships can develop and change and how feelings and attractions can complicate it.

Overall, this was a quick and fun read. The way Dodd wrote JJ's "voice" was really difficult to muddle through sometimes. She just seemed so naive and immature through the entire novel... not just during the middle school years. It was frustrating, and I actually found myself disliking JJ because of it. However, this is the kind of plot that gets me--boy next door and all that. So it still earned a "liked it" because of that. Granted, I picked this up as an Amazon freebie which helps ease the pain of the writing style. The next two books are not free (nor are they low enough price to consider purchasing) so I won't be reading further on into JJ's life.

I would recommend to those looking for a really quick, cutesy read about friends and budding romance.
