Juliet Takes a Breath by Gabby Rivera

5.0

As a Brooklyn Haitian American queer femme, reading about a Puerto-Rican from the Bronx was absolutely one of the most affirming reads in a MINUTE.

Juliet's coming out process is not just about her queer identity- it's a coming out process of figuring out what type of person, the values and convictions, the communities she learns she needs (and needs to let go of) in order to do as the title mentions.

This book gave me LOTS of laughs, and highlighted the ways our families, both chosen and blood can really surprise you in the best and worst ways. Themes touch on political activism in the Latinx, LGBTQ communities, love, sex, mixtapes, and more.
