It's MXTX's best written novel yet. The cast of characters is interesting and lovable. The world, based on ancient China, but with fantasy elements, is lovely created. The dynamic between the main couple is very mature. Only complaint is that MXTX doesn't make any of the characters explicitly queer except the main couple, which is a running problem of theirs (except in their first novel which does have another queer side couple).  The big problem I had with previous novels were the explicit and awful sex scenes. This book doesn't have any (though it does have mentions of it, which aren't bad).
