I love this book so much. I've now read it four times, so that should tell you how much I love it.

This is a beautifully written story that gives me the same kind of joy as reading Terry Pratchett has, along with the beautiful pining and romance that I've only found in a few other books. The tone of the story is a perfect balance between wholehearted optimism and finding joy in the little things and the tension of a very intense need to protect the world. Joy Demorra has balanced these two tones so expertly that it makes my head spin.

The characters are absolute perfection. They scratch some very specific itches in my brain, and I am delighted by the fact it seems that Joy reached deep into my psyche to create these characters just for me. Nathan and Vlad both delight me in different ways--I relate a lot to Vlad, and I desperately want my own Nathan--and Ursula is someone I desperately want to get to know more. I could sing the praises of this trio for ages.

While I am desperately waiting for book two, I am also well aware that the author has health issues that keep her from banging it out in a rush. I'd much rather support her and wait for a perfect sequel than she push herself too hard and end up in worse health. So, I shall pine away for book two and buy whatever short stories she releases in the interim.
