Of Love and Other Demons by Gabriel García Márquez

3.0

I’ve been wanting to read Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s work for a while and thought this would be a good place to start. Although the beginning starts off slow, I was drawn in pretty quickly through his writing style. I don’t typically (maybe ever) enjoy reading stories where religion and religious themes are given so much prominence but Marquez seems to be just as skeptical of religion as I am. The story feels more like a cautionary tale - the people in the story and their human nature are honestly way more evil than the actual superstitions or any of the ‘satanic’ things they fear.

I think I’m not an advanced enough reader to fully understand Marquez or his writing - a lot probably flew way over my head, but the pace was so slow at times that I gladly let it. This gets 3 stars from me, but I’m still excited to read more of his work.
