Can a book be great without being good? Parts of this book are rewarding, but often Burns’ writing is impenetrable through paragraphs that are pages and pages long. Whilst it did get you immersed in the setting, often this book was tiresome to get through. By about page 200 I couldn’t wait for it to be over, but also struggled to motivate myself to carry on reading.
Clearly a great piece of work, but this definitely could’ve been edited down further - there were numerous times where I was just waiting for the narrator to please get to the point
If you don’t get on with the first hundred pages, save yourself the time and don’t put yourself through the rest of it.
