Call Down the Hawk by Maggie Stiefvater

A SOLID 3.75 STARS

I have thoughts about this book. Can I have thoughts? I definitely want to talk about it in terms of how much I feel like the dynamic changed. Something about this book felt off in a way that the Raven Cycle didn't.

But anyway.

It took me about 100 pages to really get into this book because for the beginning, I felt the magic and dynamic I was constantly surrounded with during the Raven Cycle wasn't there with this book. I'm not sure how much of it was my attachment to characters like Adam, Blue, and Gansey, but something about the narrative & it consistently switching between these three different characters offput me for a while.

That said - it was good? The one thing I really picked up on is how Jordan’s hair is called kinky?? And I feel like that’s bad.

But I ended up loving Jordan and Hennessy. I think they deserve the world and I find them utterly fascinating as both art forgers and a dreamer/dream. Jordan was definitely my favorite; there was something tangible in the way she pushes and pulls against Hennessy, but understands that they are simply mirrors of each other that really caught me. And then Declan/Jordan! I feel like Declan and Jordan's dynamic was really sweet and interesting. One of the best things in this book, besides the continuing relationship between Adam and Ronan.

I ended up liking a great deal of this book, but I definitely feel like the two story lines between Carmen and Ronan & Hennessy didn't mesh. I feel like Carmen's story line is really disjointed because of the juxtaposition between this seemingly magical world and then this big government organization. However, I think she's a fantastic character and I'm interested to see more of her and Lilliana.

I feel both satisfied and dissatisfied with this book, but I guess that's because the ending kind of killed me. I feel like Bryde is some sort of Adam. I'm not sure. Something in the way he's described.
