4.5

The first book of Erdrich's I read was The Round House, which was a grievous mistake; I even speculated at the time that the rapturous praise for the book was surely rooted in some institutional recognition for Erdrich as an esteemed writer. And damn, loathe as I am to say, I have been proven correct again, for this was great. Erdrich's early prose is reminiscent of a witty blend between Toni Morrison and Zadie Smith, with a large emphasis on character-based vignettes over any discernable plot structure.

This was just plainly fantastic, and I can't wait to delve deeper into the LELU (Louise Erdrich Literary Universe), but knowing how capable of greatness she is just makes me more pissed off at The Round House. Grrr
