Ruta Sepetys' novel on Francoist Spain is beautiful, impactful, and stark.

This novel follows the course of Ana Moreno and Daniel Matheson's relationship eighteen-plus years in the making, under the guise of sunny, weathered Madrid–and the stench of long-concealed secrets under the dictatorial rule of Franco.

Estamos más guapas con la boca cerrado.

I love how Sepetys dollops a heap of history under the sway of a dramatic, wholly believable cast searching under the secrets of the Inclusa, the Guardia Civil, and Spain through the lens of photography and pain. The ethos of Spain bleeds through all of the characters - the fire of Rafa, the sweetness of Ana, the weightedness of Julia, and the curiosity of Puri. If you're looking for an informative, emotive story full of passion, secrets, and twists and turns, I recommend this.
