The Push by Ashley Audrain

4.0

This was really closer to a 4.5 stars for me. The characters will draw you in as will the story. I definitely don’t want to spoil any of this because it’s best to go in blind. There were some parts that were shockingly evil and some characters that you wanted to see grow and repair themselves but that didn’t always happen. The ending was tough.
The writing and style of the book was interesting. I hated the use of pronouns and either first person or second person narrative without clarity as to who was narrating. This was especially challenging because each chapter was really short. And every chapter might start with an unclear narrator, causing the reader to need to sort that out to fully follow what the plot was. There were also jumps in time, from current day to prior generations of the family.
Overall the story was great but some of the writer’s choices were confusing. This only mildly interfered with my enjoyment of the story.
So, I definitely recommend this one as it was recommended to me by my local independent bookseller.
