Once Upon a Time in the North by Philip Pullman

3.0

“He was twenty-four, ready for adventure, and happy to go wherever the winds took him. He'd better be, as Hester reminded him; he wasn't going to go anywhere else.”

I'd like to thank Penguin Random House Canada for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

Content Warnings: violence, death

This was a fun read! Lee, Hester, and Iorek are some of my favourite characters from the His Dark Materials series so I was excited to learn more about them. The story itself was intriguing and I liked seeing the friendship between the main characters grow. However, I would have enjoyed seeing more individual character development. There was action at every turn, especially because Lee loves to be a risk taker. I wish the story was longer so that we could see more of their adventures together, maybe even a short story collection! In terms of the illustrations, they were detailed and engaging and added a fun aspect to this reading experience.

I think that fans of the series will enjoy this special edition!
