A Game of Lies by Clare Mackintosh

Ffion Morgan is one of my favorite FMCs, and I was so excited to quickly read the second installment in her story. She’s still sassy and flawed in the best and funniest ways as she solves another crime in her small hometown. As a set of Survivor-style contestants camp on the area’s largest mountain for a reality t.v. show, things quickly devolve amidst the swirl of secrets at the forefront of the script. That’s the catch - if you’re voted off, your biggest skeleton in the closet gets revealed, so no surprise that murder finds it’s way into the casting call.

Aside from the case, Ffion must also navigate her feelings for her police partner, and it’s awkward and cringe-worthy, at times, in the most endearing of ways. It makes Ffion seem very real and human rather than the fiction that she is.

I didn’t love this story nearly as much as I did the first. Sometimes, the plot and motives got a bit mushed around, and even with a murder, it felt less dark and intense. But, I’m glad the series continues!
