A while ago, I read the first part of the Robert Hunter series, the crucifix killer. I will admit it wasn't my favorite, but I do love Robert Hunter, Garcia, the psychology that plays a big role in the book and the fact that the crime scenes and murders are very explicit. And that same opinion continued in the second part of the series.
What I liked about the executioner was the fact that this second part of the series, is build up in exactly the same way as the first part. For me, that means I got into the story a lot better and I knew what top expect, which was to expect the unexpected. It also meant I knew I had to expect a lot of conversations, a lot of thinking and a sometimes very slow story. What changes that a little bit, was the amount of murders that occured and the fact that there were 2 perpetrators.
I will admit, Carter writes books in a way that makes them easy to read through, with shorter chapters, which makes it easier to just read that extra chapter. And with short chapters, I mean 2-3 pages per chapter.
The story was good, I'm not a fan of journalists, or psychic kind of things, but it didn't bother me too much. The fact Carter knows exactly how to pick the perp and the victims and works his story out into the smallest detail, makes every story he writes worthwhile. They may not be the best i have ever read, but they are addicting and I can't wait until I can read further in the series.
If you want to read his books, be prepared for gruesome murder scenes, being left in the dark for a long time, someone who "reads a lot", casual jokes, slow burns, and very well planned motives and history for the charachters. Carter certainly won't disappoint you!
I, again, gave the executioner 3,5 stars.
