A surprisingly good middle grade novel.

Supergirl is actually emotionally going through losing her parents and her home planet, from suddenly gaining powers from our Sun’s rays, and from the pressure of being an instant superhero. Supergirl is anxious, dealing with grief, and dealing with feeling worthless.

It’s a lot of ethos for a middle grade book based on a series of dolls from a comic book empire trying to reach a young girl audience. It never feels inappropriate for kids while also not feeling like a cheapening of a more mature story.

If you can’t stand middle grade or superhero stories, and the tropes that go with them, you’re not going to enjoy this book. It does take Supergirl a frustratingly long time to figure out who the villain is and how they are manipulating her. Some characters are flat with one single plot purpose, but I was still loving it because of all the different DC cameos. There is a big reworking of DC comics canon, but that is what the entire multimedia project of DC Super Hero Girls is doing.

I was entertained the whole time. I would have been obsessed with the book series and toy line as a child. I actually do own the first wave Harley Quinn, Batgirl, and Katana (the Comic Con exclusive version) from the now defunct doll line. This book is better than any right it has to be. I definitely want to pick up the other books in the series.

7/10 but a strong 7.
