Lost Stars by Claudia Gray

"that was how evil magnified itself: it took root in the young and grew along with them."

THIS. IS. STAR WARS. claudia gray managed to write such a beautiful, intricate story without following any main character we know from the saga, and with such care? i’m in awe.

we follow ciena and thane, childhood best friends (to lovers), both from a poor planet and indoctrinated by the empire from a young age, as they go through the war and eventually diverge paths as one joins the rebellion.
it depicts war in such a realistic way, confronting both ideologies without manichaeism, and displaying the characters’ biggest form of loyalty: the one they have for eachother.

finally, i loved how it followed all the main events from the trilogy and paved the way for the force awakens. highly recommend, even if you’re not a big star wars fan!
